Let’s build comfortable homes for people with serious disabilities, where they can live like other adults - without having to rely on their parents, providing necessary support to ensure their independence.

Who are the “Uncomfortables“?

The “Uncomfortables” is more than just a fund - it is the voice of families who fight every day for the dignified lives of their children with serious disabilities. We invite everyone to join us in creating a world where every person has the right to a comfortable and dignified life - including people with disabilities and their families. Let’s build homes that will allow parents and their grown-up children to live their own independent lives.

Why “Uncomfortables”?

Uncomfortable to the environment

The infrastructure in Lithuania is not adapted for people with complex disabilities. Public institutions, grocery stores, and even public transportation are often not equipped to meet the needs of people with disabilities, while public services fail to provide the necessary support. As a result, people with disabilities remain dependent on 24/7 care from their relatives.

Uncomfortable to the government

Even though there are many people with disabilities in Lithuania, government financial support for them is very limited. The social benefits and services provided are often insufficient to ensure the necessary care for people with serious disabilities, meaning that a large part of the burden falls on their relatives. Consequently, families in such circumstances experience financial and social strain, as well as emotional exhaustion.

Uncomfortable to the families

Families with relatives who have complex disabilities dedicate an enormous amount of time to constant caregiving, which leads to complete exhaustion and restrictions on their personal freedom. This does not end even when their children grow up. Due to insufficient government services, an adult with a disability becomes a burden on the family - one that not all families are able to bear. These families are constantly at risk of social isolation and poverty.

Uncomfortable to the society

There is a lack of open dialogue about disability in society, which fosters stigmas and stereotypes. Because public spaces are often not accessible, people with disabilities are rarely seen, leaving others feeling uncomfortable and unsure of how to interact. This increases social exclusion and discrimination in the labor market, educational institutions, and other areas of life.

Uncomfortable homes

Currently, there are not enough residential homes in Lithuania adapted for people with severe disabilities. Government-funded projects focus on individuals who require less care, leaving people with complex disabilities on the sidelines. Nepatogūs aims to change this situation by building homes specifically designed for them. Currently, there are more than 300 people with disabilities waiting to move into long-term social care facilities.

Co-living homes

The “Uncomfortables” Foundation is building the first homes in Lithuania for people with severe complex disabilities. These homes will be individually adapted to meet each resident’s needs and will provide essential living conditions with round-the-clock care and assistance. The homes will not only ensure access to support services but also enable people with disabilities to live a dignified and more independent life, while allowing their relatives to return to the workforce and pursue their personal dreams.

The specific needs for each person

These homes are not care homes or orphanages. They are not boarding houses or medical facilities. They are - HOMES. Each home will be designed and equipped with the specific needs of each resident in mind - it will not only be a safe shelter but also a place where every resident can spend their time the way they want.

Four people living in a single house

The environment of these homes will encourage the creation and maintenance of social connections, and all necessary services will be provided according to each resident’s individual plan. To ensure quality of life and meet personal needs, each home will accommodate four people with severe complex disabilities.

In the future - more co-living houses

The first pilot project was built through the initiative of the foundation’s founders and has opened its doors in 2025. The foundation’s goal over the next 10 years is to raise funds and build 10 similar homes, so that more people with severe complex disabilities can experience a dignified and fulfilling life in communal homes that truly feel like home. The locations of the homes will be planned based on need.
